The Thanksgiving Day parade is a big part of the tradition of the holiday.
There’s a grandness to every facet of the parade…which is why when things go awry, those flubs reach a whole new level. That’s part of the beauty of a live event: Absolutely anything can happen! With that in mind, here’s a selection of some of our favorite fails of Thanksgiving Day parade past.
Live TV Falls
It’s one thing to fall during your routine, but it’s another thing all together when the cameras catch you and you just so happen to be front and center. You got to feel for this color guard member of the Georgia State University Marching Band and this poor cheerleader. We’re sure none of their friends will ever let them live this down.
It's the FALL season!
Front and center at the 2012 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and this cheerleader fails to get it up.
Very Awkward Lip-Syncing
Other fails come in the form of simply missing your cue, like Scotty McCreery. Spoiler: He’s lip syncing, everybody!
Scotty McCreery misses his cue to start lip syncing at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
That time Barney was killed
Lastly, there are the balloons. There have been countless tales of balloons getting caught on buildings and deflating or being taken away with some strong wind, but this video of the Barney balloon being taken out during the 1997 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade must have traumatized young children everywhere, while secretly their parents were cheering inside, because they’re beyond annoyed at that purple dinosaur and his earworm songs.
In 1997, thousands of kids were traumatized while watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Due to powerful winds, Barney the purple dinosaur hit a lamp post, and eventually was torn to shreds as kids and families shrieked in terror. "Gave the kids nightmares," noted one spectator.
