There is no shame in buying something used and often times it may actually be better to buy something preowned than brand new. Thrift stores, garage sales, and online used clothing sites are just a few places to find great items when you're on a budget. Take a look at some items you should buy secondhand.
Designer Clothes & Accessories
Designer clothes, bags, and accessories are items you should buy secondhand. Between consignment shops & online secondhand stores there are lots of ways to score luxury items without the designer price tag. Stores like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Nordstrom Rack offer designer brands at a fraction of the cost. If online shopping is more your speed sites like Mercari, ThredUp, and Poshmark are great sites to check out to purchase preowned designer items.
Cars
Car buying can be stressful and making sure you get the best price is usually the first priority for people in the market for a car. Cars are something that you don't need to buy brand new, but buying a used vehicle can sometimes be even more stressful than buying a brand new one. Websites like CarGurus.com and Carvana.com make finding the right price easy by rating vehicles available for sale and weeding out any bad deals.
Furniture
If you are a DIYer, furniture is one of the best items to buy secondhand. Garage sales, estate sales, consignment shops, Craigslist, and Facebook Marketplace are great places to find gently used furniture. With a little TLC and usually some paint or stain and some hardware you can transform a piece to fit your own style for a fraction of the cost of buying new.
Tools
If you are looking for a tool or tools before you run to your local home improvement store check Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace first. Often times you can find tools in good condition sold at a low price.
Baby Gear
Babies grow like weeds and develop so fast. Baby products are great items you should buy secondhand. Clothes, playsets, and toys can be found on resale sites like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.
Books
Garage sales and stores like Goodwill are a great place to find used books for usually just a few cents. Textbooks are another item that you should buy secondhand, even if it is an older version. Often times the newer version has such minor changes that an older version won't make much difference. Buying your textbooks used will save you a lot of money in the long run.
Bikes
If you're in the market for a set of wheels check eBay, Craigslist, and Facebook Marketplace first. Many people sell used bikes that are in great condition for a fraction of the cost of a brand new one. However, make sure to always buy your helmet new.
Kitchen Appliances
There are always new kitchen gadgets people buy, use once, and then throw in the closet and forget about them. They then end up on Craigslist, Facebook, eBay, or at a garage sale. Buying kitchen appliances used is a great way to save money and most appliances last a long time so you are still getting your money's worth.
Exercise equipment
Exercise equipment such as ellipticals, exercise bikes, treadmills, and weights are items that if in good condition are a great preowned item to buy. Before you buy test the equipment to make sure it works. Exercise equipment can be found on Craigslist, Facebook, and at garage sales but also check for equipment if a local gym is doing any renovations or upgrades as they might be selling their older equipment.
Wedding Décor
Wedding décor typically is only used for one day and can easily be found on resale sites. From arches, to signs and runners, to even wedding dresses, a quick search on Facebook Marketplace listed tons of items. You can DIY these items or use as is all while helping keep the cost of the big day down.
