Boy Lives Out His Dream to Become a Garbage Man For The Day
A dream come true!
On Saturday, eight-year-old Jaxon Hancock’s dream came true when he was a garbage man for the day.
Hancock has recently been picking up trash in his community to help keep it clean. Once the City of Corpus Christi got word, they invited him to join the Corpus Christi Solid Waste Disposal so he could learn all about being a garbage man.
“It helps the community and the community workers pick up trash while they work,” Hancock said when asked why he wanted to be a garbage man.
He got the chance to ride around in the Solid Waste Disposal’s trash truck with 11-year-old Zackary Gonzalez. Gonzalez also is interesting in working with the Solid Waste Department and reached out to the City of Corpus Christi to see how he could improve his community’s recycling.
“The landfills are all going to fill up super quickly if you don’t recycle and landfills are important because they take away all the trash instead of it just blowing around all over the city,” Gonzalez said.
Javier Molina, a sanitation operator for the City of Corpus Christi helped educate the two boys about the significance of inspecting a truck before driving it and overall safety.
He also set out to work in the trash industry ever since he was a little boy.
“You know how they ask you kids…what do you want to be? Some kids said a cop, some doctor, and then I said hey, I want to be a trash man. At the time it was a joke but when I was actually behind the wheel it dawned on me…wait a minute…but I enjoy it,” Molina said.
The boys also got a tour of the Cefe Valenzuela Landfil in Robstown, Texas. While touring, Hancock realized he would rather work at the landfill than be a garbage man.
“I want to be a landfill worker because they work hard and that they help the community,” he said.
The day was very successful, even ending in a friendship amongst the two boys.
