While the official start of fall isn’t until tomorrow (September 22) many are already sipping pumpkin spice. But pumpkin isn’t just for lattes anymore. If you are a fan of the seasonal flavor check out these four beers from Iron Hill and Neshaminy Creek.
First up is Iron Hill’s Pumpkin Ale, brewed with the spices of the season, a touch of vanilla bean, and, of course, real pumpkin, this ale is as much a treat as it is a beer. And, just like the full moon, it’s big, bright, bold, and casts that feeling of fall on everyone who sees it…or, rather, sips it. Next are three beers from Neshaminy Creek including, Punkless Dunkel, a Dark Wheat Ale with Pumpkin and Spices. Starting with an imperial version of a retired brew, Dunks Ferry Dunkelweizen, as the base, pumpkin puree along with more than a dash of all the classic pumpkin pie spices is added right into the kettle. Dark brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice all pair perfectly with the banana esters and spicy clove notes imparted by the yeast during its vigorous fermentation. The rich malty body, somewhat sweet character, and warm finish make Punkless Dunkel the go-to brew as Autumn comes into view. This fall staple sits at an ABV of 8.8%.
Young Pumpkinstein is a medium-bodied Märzen-Style Lager with a toasty malt character brewed with allspice, candied ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The beer recalls freshly baked bread and ginger snaps – a fall favorite around the brewery. The bright pumpkin spices and classic German hops, Herkules and Hallertauer, compliment the Young Pumpkinstein’s dry finish and 5.2% ABV.
Resurrecting a forgotten style, JAWN of the Dead by Neshaminy Creek is a 6.5% ABV Red Rye IPA with 20% rye malt. This is a variation on the year-round JAWN American Pale Ale is teeming with Apollo, Ekuanot, Mosaic, and Nuggets hops. JAWN of the Dead’s icy, undead body is bready and toasty with a spicy bite that accentuates a pronounced bitterness. There is no escape from the notes of pine, berries, and grilled tangerine.
