Ashley McBryde’s Tearful Opry Invite From Garth Brooks
Ashley McBryde appeared on CBS This Morning to talk about her new album Lindeville and was shocked to see Garth Brooks on video from Nashville wanting to ask her a question.
Garth said, “I am here for a proposal.” Gayle King said, “You’re already married.” He replied, “I am; this is a family. You know where I am; I’m at the Grand Ole Opry; I’m standing in the circle of wood right now where you stand. Miss Ashley McBryde, on behalf of the Opry, and I am an Opry member myself, I will try not to cry; we would love for you to consider becoming the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry.”
Ashley got really emotional, took a deep breath, and held back tears before saying, “Um, it would be a great joy and honor of my life. Thank you, Garth. My goodness.” As Gayle said, “Ahh,” Brooks said, “It’s pretty cool; it’s the longest-living family in music history; you belong in it. We need you, and you will make it stronger for decades to come. I love you. Congratulations couldn’t happen to a sweeter person.”
King said, “And coming from you; Garth Brooks means so much. Ashley, what are you thinking right now? Why is this so emotional?” Ashley took a tissue and sighed, “This is a lifelong… I mean, there is Grammys and being inducted into the Grand Ole Opry are the two greatest things that could happen to you as an entertainer, and I’ve always said I will earn this, and this is a pretty surreal moment.”
Gayle then asked Brooks if Ashley has earned it. And he says, “One hundred percent. There isn’t anybody in this family who hasn’t because it’s the love they show for the Opry, it’s the respect they show for country music, and try to remember it is the longest-living family in music history. So, Grammys, CMAs, they are all gonna fade; this won’t. This will be until the day they put you in the ground. You will be part of the coolest show on the planet.”
They all pause, and McBryde said, “Wow, what a morning; thank you, Garth. I can’t wait to see you and hug you.”
They all said “bye” to Garth, and King said that Brooks wanted to be there to do it in person. She then told Ashley, “It was so hard to keep this secret; your team knew.” Then they showed the people in the green room, and Ashley saw her mother; they brought her out, and they hugged, and mom gushed, “I am so proud of you.”
CBS This Morning tweeted the emotional exchange, writing, “Only on #CBSMornings, two-time Grammy-winner @garthbrooks just surprised singer-songwriter @AshleyMcBryde with an invitation to join the “longest-living family in music history,” at the @opry!”
