Due to a Massive Avocado Surplus, Philly is Giving Out Free Avocados!
Woman shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables in supermarket. Healthy eating lifestyle concept.
How fun is this!? There isn’t much I love more than guacamole, this is delicious!
Wooder Ice has all the details:
Recently there’s been news of supply chain issues and shortages of various foods and products. However, it looks like one food is experiencing the opposite. The food industry is experiencing a massive surplus of avocados which means millions of perfectly great avocados are at risk of going to waste. However, local non-profit @sharingexcess found the perfect solution, Avogeddon.
From Wednesday October 19th Through Friday October 21st, Sharing Excess will host Avogeddon and everyone gets free avocados. That’s right so the next Phillies, Flyers, Union or Eagles game you can make the freshest guac. About 25 semi-trucks will converge at FDR Park at Pattison & 20th Street from 12 pm to 6 pm each day.
Avogeddon will be the largest food distribution to date in FDR park. “We’re going to distribute free avocados to everyone in Philadelphia. Literally everyone; individuals, nonprofits, restaurants, anyone you can think of. We want to go on radio stations, news channels, social media, and any and every outlet to let people know. We’ve cleared our schedules, and our team will be loading cars all day, each day, starting Wednesday afternoon, and will go into Thursday and Friday until they’re all gone,” states Sharing Excess Operations Director Victoria Wilson. So if you have a recipe that calls for avocados, here’s your chance to save some money.
Philadelphia Bakery Among Yelp's Top 100 Donut Shops in The Country
I don’t know about you, but I’ve never met a doughnut I didn’t like. If you feel the same as me then you know we have some great doughnut shops in our area and Yelp agrees!
In honor of upcoming National Donut Day on Friday, June 3, Yelp released its annual Top 100 US Donut Shops list.
Beiler’s Bakery in Philadelphia ranked 11th overall on the list because of their yeast raised donuts, especially their cream filled variety. If you haven’t had a Beiler’s donut stop by for a donut in a variety of flavors. Beiler’s Bakery also has locations in Lancaster and Germantown, MD.
3 New Jersey locations were also featured on the list. Heading down the shore this summer? If you planned to hit the beach by one of these New Jersey towns I’d add in a trip for donuts. Coming in at 35 is Uncle Dood’s Donuts in Toms River, New Jersey. Purple Glaze Donuts in Asbury Park came in at number 49 and Nauti Donuts in Ocean City was the 55th spot on the list.
“To create this year’s Top 100 US Donut Shops list, we scoured the nation for the best bakers of America’s glazed, iced, dipped, sprinkled, and cream-filled confections. Some shops, like #1-ranked Round Rock Donuts near Austin, Texas, are local institutions that have been serving their communities for generations. Others, like SK Donuts & Croissant in Los Angeles (#2), are family businesses that trade hard work and great recipes for a taste of the American dream.”
Yelp identified businesses in the donuts category and then ranked those spots using a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews.
