Megan Moroney has made quite a name for herself recently. The rising country music star released her debut album “Lucky” on May 5, her hit song “Tennessee Orange is climbing the charts, she won a CMT Award for 2023 Breakthrough Female Video of the Year for “Tennessee Orange” and was most recently nominated for an ACM for New Female Artist.

The Georgia native moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music and has worked hard on her debut album, cowriting every song.

In an interview she told us, “They’re all my favorite. I feel like it's like having children. You can't pick a favorite, but if I had to, I'd probably go with “I'm Not Pretty” or for the sad songs, I would go with “Why Johnny?””.

Also on Moroney’s debut album is a song called “I’m Not Pretty” which stems from a personal experience where an ex boyfriend’s girlfriend did in fact like a picture of Megan from 2016. Although Moroney could have talked to that person about it, it was much more fun to write a song about it.

“I probably could have said something personally to the person about it, but it's kind of just like, why not just write a song about it that makes people kind of laugh and whatever? Everybody knows that kind of experience and situations”.

Those experiences and situations are what inspire Moroney’s songs, each one of her songs stem from a personal experience and when people tell her they can relate to her music that’s extremely rewarding to her as a songwriter and makes her want to continue writing music.

While writing the title track “Lucky”, Moroney had a good feeling about it and even said she thought it might be the title track the day they wrote it.

“So I had the You're Lucky I'm Drinking my title idea kind of, because there's been several instances where my girlfriends and I will be out drinking and having a good time and the tequila starts to taste like, maybe you didn't treat me that bad and maybe it wasn't so horrible. And so its just kind of like a party song that's supposed to be fun. And, you know, my track guy Messy, that builds out the track for the day that we wrote it, I wanted it to be this like honky tonk, you know, two stepping, line dance song type thing. I was so excited about the song because it was not like any other song I'd ever written that I was like, I think this might be the title track. Like I said that the day that we wrote it, and I was just really excited about it because it makes you want to like line dance in a casino. And, you know, I went back and forth with like oh, should my debut album be like self-titled or what? And I was like, I would honestly have more fun. I think building out this like Lucky world than I would just self-titling it”.

Moroney is currently out performing songs from “Lucky” on Brooks & Dunn’s REBOOT Tour and we will see her at TidalWave Fest in Atlantic City August 11-13 and on September 22 at TLA.

Megan Moroney's debut radio single "Tennesee Orange" has become her first hit, now sitting in the Top ten on the country charts this week and is moving north. The song's video even won Megan her first CMT Music Award in April (4/2) in the "Breakthrough Female Artist category," an award that Taylor Swift won back in 2007 for her video, "Tim McGraw." Moroney was thrilled with her first honor, calling winning the award surreal.

On May 5, Megan's debut album, Lucky, was released, featuring "Tennesee Orange." Moroney told us in a recent interview, "I've wanted to release my debut album since I moved to town. Now that it's done, I'm just so proud of the songs. I've been working on it for a lot longer than people think I have been."

One song that stands out in the new work is a song she co-wrote called "I'm Not Pretty." Megan shared with us how the song came about, "I kind of tell the story of 'I'm Not Pretty' in the song. It was 2 am, and one of my ex-boyfriend's new girlfriends accidentally liked one of my photos from 2016 in Panama City. It's still on my Instagram. You can go look for it."

She added, "I think I just took a situation that had happened and that I thought I was like a little bit funny, and I turned it into a song, and it's light-hearted and not supposed to be too serious, but that's a funny one. "

As Moroney's star starts to rise in country music, we take a look at the last couple of years she has enjoyed in the spotlight of Nashville and beyond.
