James Gunn Reveals Groot’s Secret Origin
Since the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy has been completed, fans have wondered about Groot’s origin story. In the final installment, we learned about Rocket’s heart-wrenching origin story (Keep scrolling below for more on that). On Threads, director James Gunn has been actively responding to fan questions about his upcoming DCEU projects, giving advice to aspiring directors, and talking about the Guardians of the Galaxy characters.
One person wondered about a character named Tibius Lark, whose name appeared in the first Guardians installment. The name was displayed on Groot’s rap sheet on Xandar before being transferred to the Kyln after he had been arrested by the Nova Corps. The fan asked over the weekend for Gunn to reveal the relation of this character to Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). In response, Gunn said he wrote a short film explaining how Rocket and Groot met.
Groot’s Secret Origin Story
He revealed it was even storyboarded, location scouted, and test footage was completed for it. The short film was seen at San Diego Comic-Con in the “trailer” they cut together after 12 days of shooting. However, they didn’t have time to finish it as the Vol. 1 was getting set in motion. Despite that, the director reveals Tibius Lark, Groot, and Rocket were all imprisoned in a “deep well in the ground. Tibius was on the verge of dying. He explained to Rocket he had been caring for Groot for years.”

Lark was revealed to be a former zookeeper in a “s—ty galactic-side zoo” that Groot was on exhibit. He saved Groot, who became his loyal friend to the end. Before he dies, Lark asked Rocket to take care of Groot, and as Rocket looked down in the dark cell, he noticed Lark was a robot. Guards from above heard a rumbling and came to investigate the noise when they saw Rocket and Groot “bursting up from the ground, Rocket on Groot’s shoulder.” In Rocket’s hands was a machine gun made from Tibius Lark’s body, which he used to shoot all the guards to escape. The pair stayed together until they met the Guardians.
Will There Be A Release?
After reading Gunn’s amazing story, one fan asked him to release it on YouTube, but Gunn said he already gave a detailed explanation on Threads. He added, “The release isn’t the problem, it was the making of which would have taken me away from Vol 1, and I didn’t need the extra headache, like how I shot the Holiday Special during Vol 3.”
