Put your phone away. That is the message from the latest research according to the Hinge dating app. Hinge hears you and launched “Distraction-Free Dating.”

Let’s be honest. Using your phone on a date is not a good look. No one is made to feel special when the one they are with has his or her nose in their phone. The goal of distraction-free dating is to increase your dating experience by forcing you to be present.

Proof that You Want Distraction-Free Dating

To prove the point , Hinge ran some numbers. It turns out that a whopping 75-percent of Hinge daters are more hesitant to open up to their date if that person is on their phone. Seventy-eight-percent assume their match isn’t interested if they’re on their phone during the date. Whether you are on a date, out with friends, or even spending time with your own children, there is definitely a disconnect when your company is looking at their phone or smart-watch instead of looking at you.

But it is not easy to just turn it off when you are programmed to keep one eye on your phone at all times. So, how do you do it? Hinge understands your plight. The app came up with a check-list to consider for a successful distraction-free dating experience.

How to Make the Meetup More Meaningful:

Put your phone on silent and keep it out of sight.
If you have to use your phone to look at a restaurant’s QR code menu or respond to an urgent message from your roommate, do it quickly and then put your phone away again.
If you have plans for after the date, make the arrangements in advance, including what time and where you’ll meet, so you’re not multitasking during the date.
Try not to get into any intense conversations or read work emails right before the date, since this can distract you and make you feel like you need to get back to someone.
Don’t pull your phone out during the date to show someone a meme. Instead, use this as a way to connect with them later.
Leave wearable tech, such as your Apple Watch, at home or turn off your notifications so you won’t be tempted to glance at it. That’s a screen too!
