Chris Stapleton: Why He Cut Drinking Out Of His Life
Chris Stapleton did a new interview with GQ Magazine and talked about a song on his upcoming album that talks about excessive drinking called “The Bottom.”
Chris told the publication that while he didn’t have to go to rehab, he was told by a doctor to cut out drinking, and he did just that. He said, “I like to tell people that I got into a drinking contest with myself in my 20s, and I lost.”
He added, noting that he drank so he could write songs about it, “When you’re younger, you feel like you have to do certain things in order to occupy some of these spaces, to make yourself feel like you’re legit. You want to feel things. You want to be able to write about things authentically. If somebody working a different kind of job drank themselves to death in the name of being better at that job, it wouldn’t make sense to anybody.”

In the same interview, Stapleton talked about his five children and having three boys under the age of six. He said that boys are kind of “cavemen until they’re 17.” He added that he and his wife are just trying to make sure “everybody doesn’t get killed.”
Chris did reveal his touring pastime of collecting antiques. He said it was his “version of hunting.” Stapleton keeps his collection in a warehouse near Nashville and has some cool things, like a travel case with “Willie Nelson” stenciled on its side. He noted that he feels he can pull those “ghosts” into what he’s doing, like “meeting the older guys and soaking up as much as you can.”
Chris also revealed that he and his wife attended Beyoncé’s “Renaissance World Tour” in Atlanta recently, saying what a “big show” it was. He talked about the dancers and explosions on stage but said he was most impressed with her “singing her a– off.”
Stapleton also talked about his fame, saying he never wanted to be famous for “the sake of being famous.” He did admit that playing a show to a packed house of people is like a drug to him.
