Do the Pinch Test at Your Next Tailgate
Are you ready for the heat? The Pinch Test will let you know. Summer is here and with it comes the summer concert series. That leads to long days tailgating in the sun and late nights under the stars. And, let’s face it, probably some alcoholic beverages.
The most important thing you can do when summer comes is stay hydrated. Many of us think we drink enough to keep our bodies in a healthy state, but that is a common misconception.
- Did you know there are foods and beverages you should avoid in the heat?
- Did you know that water alone cannot quickly pull you from a state of dehydration?
- Did you know there is a pinch test to see if you are hydrated or not?
DOs & DON’Ts
In order to beat the heat and avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke, the American Red Cross offers some DOs and DON’Ts:
- DO NOT eat or drink sugary foods and drinks
- DO NOT drink caffeinated drinks
- DO NOT drink alcoholic beverages
- DO drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- DO combine water with salty snacks or a sports drink to replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat
- DO use the “pinch test” to see whether or not you are hydrated.
The Pinch Test
The Pinch Test is an easy way to determine whether or not you need to start chugging the water instead of another beer.
First, you place your hand, palm down, on a flat surface. Next, use your other hand to pinch and pull a small amount of skin on the back of your flat hand.
If the skin goes back quickly, you are in good shape. If the skin takes a while to move back into place, it’s time to hydrate.
Pack & Plan Properly
When packing for concert day, make sure you do so wisely.
- Pack plenty of water in coolers. Water is important, but cool water will cool your body from the inside out.
- Pack a rag or some sort of cloth you can use to dunk in water and put on the back of your neck to cool your body down.
- Pack sports drinks or hydration powder sticks to add to your water.
- Pack salty snacks like pretzels and nuts. The salt helps your body retain water.
Start your day hydrated. If you know you will be out in the sun and drinking, start hydrating a couple days before concert day. It is so important to balance your sugary/alcoholic drinks which dehydrate you with drinks that rehydrate you. A good rule of thumb is to drink a water in between each alcoholic beverage.
