The Best Photo From The 2024 Olympics Didn't Even Happen In Paris

The 2024 Summer Olympics are happening right now in Paris, but not every competition is currently being held there. For some, they are miles away from Paris to compete in the Summer Games.

Olympic Surfing

For the 2024 Olympics, the surfing competitions are being held in Tahiti. This will be the second time that surfing is featured in the Olympics, making it's first debut at the 2020 Toyoko games. Why are the women's and men's surfing competitions not being held in France? The answer is simple. France does not have the ideal conditions at its beaches to hold this level of competition. According to Olympic officials, "It offers an opportunity to engage French overseas territories and their communities in the Olympic Games—for the first time in history—while showcasing France’s rich and diverse heritage."

Surf Correspondent, Colin Jost

Saturday Night Live's Colin Jost is the surfing correspondent for NBC. They have sent him to Tahiti to cover the surfing competitions being held there. Colin Jost's resume spreads wider than being a comedy writer. In his free time, Jost loves to surf! Watch the video below of him convincing the rest of America why he is fit for the job.

Now, a photographer over 9,800 miles away from Paris has snapped the best photo of an Olympian. Jerome Brouillet, a French photographer for the 2024 Olympic Games, has been stationed in Tahiti to cover the surfing competitions. On July 29th, he captured what is now called "the best photo from the 2024 Olympics" of surfer Gabriel Medina. The Brazilian Olympian is seen practically floating in the air a few feet above the ocean, holding up his finger to signal that he is number one.

Medina is holding up his pointer finger because he believes that he has just won first place. He was even flashing all of his fingers to symbol the number 10 to the judges as he escapes an epic wave.

Unfortunately, Medina did not have a perfect score, but rather a 9.90. That close. Medina will advance to the next round with photographer Jerome Brouillet capturing every moment.
