A new look will be coming to a familiar Philadelphia sports venue during the coming weeks.
On Monday, July 28, Comcast Spectacor unveiled renderings for the rebranded Xfinity Mobile Arena, the home arena for the Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers (former Wells Fargo Center). The renderings reveal a purple color scheme and a 12-foot-tall "X" sculpture at one of the facility's entrances.
Comcast Spectacor submitted the renderings featuring designs by Jones Sign to the Sign Committee of the Philadelphia Art Commission. The goal is to complete the work during August in advance of a rebranding celebration at the venue scheduled for Sept. 2.
“We need to clear Signage Committee approvals at the July 30 meeting with full Commission approval at the August 13 meeting in order to meet the construction schedule,” attorney Richard Hayden of Saul Ewing LLP wrote in the application, according to BisNow.
The new branding for Xfinity Mobile Arena is scheduled to remain in place until the 2030-2031 NBA season. At that point, Comcast Spectacor and Sixers owner Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) hope to debut a new arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.
HBSE spent several years seeking approvals for a new Center City arena that would replace a portion of the Fashion District mall at 12th and Filbert Streets. The company reverted to the South Philadelphia Sports Complex after receiving approval from the Philadelphia City Council for the project.
According to BisNow, Comcast Spectacor is also planning a $2.5 billion mixed-use redevelopment of the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. Redevelopment plans would include new apartments, hotels, and a 5,500-seat live performance facility at the venue site.
