Lily's Fall Movie Guide:
1. Good Will Hunting
Boston in the fall? Say less. I just watched this masterpiece last week, and wow - it’s incredible. If you haven't watched this film, you absolutely have to. It is so powerful and moving, it left me in awe. It follows a brilliant, but troubled, young man from Boston. A professor takes notice of his intelligence and helps him find a therapist who will change his life. His therapy lessons make him confront his fears and prove his potential, showing him what he truly wants in life.
It shows the importance of self-discovery and human connection. Aside from the fact that the move is a work of art, the scenery of Boston and the autumn atmosphere really bring a sense of comfort in this autumn weather. The movie encompasses so many layers of depth and emotion, it is absolutely a must-watch this fall. I can’t believe I have just discovered it now, but it is without a doubt a must-watch!
2. Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus is more of a Halloween vibe for this fall, but in my opinion, it is a classic! This movie follows a sceptical teenager who accidentally resurrects the Sanderson sisters, three witches, and he is in a struggle to stop the witches before they wreak havoc on Halloween night. This movie has all the spooky fall feelings from the setting of Salem, to the crisp fall leaves and spooky settings, this is the perfect spooky movie for fall!
3. Practical Magic
This is my all-time favorite fall movie - hands down, so it had to make my fall movie guide. I have watched this probably over 10 times, and it never gets old! Practical magic follows two sisters who try to live a normal life, until things spiral hilariously and magically out of control. Funny, romantic, cozy, even spooky at times, this feel-good movie is everything that I look for when I’m on the hunt for a cozy fall movie. It is one of my all-time favorites, and I highly recommend that you check it out.
4. Mystic Pizza
This is my most recent watch, and it was a hit in my apartment! It is a coming-of-age drama set in a small fishing town in Mystic, Connecticut. By the way, if you have never been to Mystic, you have to add it to your travel list because it is the cutest town ever, no matter what the season! The movie follows three young women who work at a local pizza shop. It follows their navigation of love, identity, and the wonder of the future as the girls navigate life after high school. This movie gives coastal fall vibes and is such a sweet watch and a feel-good movie perfect for a chill fall night.
5. Little Women
This film is autumn in a movie, hands down. Based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, the story follows the lives of the March Sisters- Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy, as they grow up in 19th-century New England. It explores questions of love, ambition, loss, and sisterhood while being full of old-time fall vibes - candlelight, crunchy leaves, hand-sewn clothes, and all the fall nostalgia you need in your life this fall. This movie is a masterpiece, and in my opinion, it should be paired with a cup of tea and some warm fall cookies to set you up for the perfect fall movie night.
6. When Harry Met Sally
This one is for the rom-com lovers out there! A heartfelt romance comedy, When Harry Met Sally explores the question of whether or not men and women can really be ‘just friends’. It follows the ever-crossing paths of Harry and Sally, as they evolve from strangers to something more complicated. The iconic New York in the fall is captured perfectly in this film. Cozy sweaters, scarves, and walks in the crispy fall weather are all the feelings you will get from this film. It makes you want to slow down and appreciate the little moments in life, especially in the fall!
7. Twilight
Whether you’re a fan or a skeptic, you can’t deny that Twilight is totally a fall vibe. Twilight is based on the bestselling novel by Stephanie Meyer, which follows Bella Swan, a teenager who moves to the spooky and overcast town of Forks, Washington. There she meets a mysterious stranger, and it will change her life forever. This stranger just happens to be a 100-year-old vampire, and things get a little wild from there! Romance, drama, and supernatural forces all come together to make this unforgettable film. The rainy skies, dense forests, and foggy atmosphere are the perfect rainy fall day film.
8. Knives Out
Knives Out is the PERFECT who-dunnit mystery to get wrapped up in this fall. I grew up loving Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, and this movie totally wrapped me up in that mystery, suspenseful energy that I have always loved. This movie begins when crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead after his 85th birthday party, and detective Benoit Blank arrives on the scene to untangle a web of lies, secrets, and confusion. It is incredibly entertaining in itself, not to mention it is full of fall in New England and set inside an old mansion. Crackling leaves, warm tones, and moody fall ambiance are perfect for the fall and for mystery lovers out there!
9. Dead Poets Society
This movie goes beyond fall, it is beautiful and challenging and, let’s be honest, poetic. It is set in a prestigious boys’ school in Vermont, and it explores the tension between tradition and individuality, which is shown through the eyes of an inspiring English teacher. Themes of poetry, rebellion, tragedy, and passion, it has all the candles, books, and fall scenery you need! This film will certainly stir your soul this fall!
10. Harry Potter
Harry Potter on a fall movie guide? They just make sense. These movies are set in England, and more importantly, in the wizarding world. They take place at Hogwarts, a school for witchcraft and Wizardry, and follow Harry Potter and his two friends, Ron and Hermione, as they navigate the mystery and truth of his past, and fight the evil that struggles to take over the wizarding world. It is a hands-down must-watch if you haven't seen it. Harry Potter is fall in cinematic form. Floating candles, enchanted forests, magical feasts, this fall is the time to watch this movie (or rewatch it like me) because it is the ultimate fall movie.
Well, there you have it - my ultimate fall movie guide! Whatever fall vibe you’re feeling, there's something here to fit every fall mood.
Go light a candle, grab a comfy blanket, and get ready for the perfect fall evening! Happy fall, everyone!
