The Miracle on South 13th Street, a popular December holiday display along the 1600 block of South 13th Street in South Philly, routinely draws large crowds to view thousands of dazzling holiday lights. The attraction, however, is increasing traffic congestion and raising safety concerns among residents.

According to 6abc, Morris Street near 12th Street was briefly closed during the weekend of Dec. 6-7, diverting vehicles to 13th Street. As of Monday, Dec. 8, Morris Street has reopened, but that doesn't mean the traffic headaches have gone away.

"The sound of people honking, road rage, people screaming at each other because they can't get by. That's not something that we want," said Beckett Woodworth, who lives in South Philadelphia, in a statement shared with 6abc.

Woodworth is one of several South Philly residents urging the city to consider open streets or pedestrian-only periods during peak times, including weekend street closures to vehicles. Officials, however, warn about possible negative impacts and feasibility concerns.

"I'd be happy to have that discussion with the Streets Department and look at logistics and see if that's even possible," said Councilmember Mark Squilla, who represents the neighborhood on City Council, in a statement provided to 6abc.

Officials have already implemented some measures, such as electronic signage and coordination with tour and trolley operators, but some residents say more needs to be done.

The Miracle on South 13th Street display runs daily from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. through Jan. 1, 2026. In addition to providing a visitor attraction, it also serves as a charitable fundraiser benefiting multiple causes.
