Philadelphia, West Chester Named Among 5 Most Walkable PA Cities

Philadelphia and West Chester have been recognized as two of the five best walkable cities in Pennsylvania. According to a recent report by the website Islands, the two southeastern Pennsylvania communities score high for their downtowns, historic urban layouts, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure that foster daily walking and social interaction.

To identify the walkable cities in Pennsylvania, Islands editors consulted WalkScore, a walkability scoring tool. Each selected city below earned a score of 71 or higher due to characteristics such as proximity to amenities and the presence of pedestrian-friendly street networks. 

Islands editors also used Reddit, a forum-style social media platform, and the forums at City-Data.com (which cover topics such as cities, neighborhoods, demographics, and local living) to gather feedback and suggestions from Pennsylvania residents. 

Lancaster leads with a Walk Score of 81. Attractions include Musser Park and the Lancaster Central Market. A dense cluster of bars, cafes, and restaurants is within minutes' reach.

Philadelphia stands out with a Walk Score of 75. The city features multiple neighborhoods and compact corridors, such as Market East, Reading Terminal Market, and Rittenhouse Square, that draw foot traffic to cultural and historic sites.

West Chester records a walkable score of 74. A compact core along Gay, High, and Market streets anchors the community. Historic architecture, a vibrant dining scene, and access to parks and heritage sites are all within easy walking distance of places in West Chester.

Reading posts a Walk Score of 72. Downtown arts venues, parks, and landmarks such as the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts and the Mount Penn pagoda invite visitors and residents to explore these attractions and other nearby amenities.

York rounds out the list with a Walk Score of 71. Visitors and residents appreciate the city's historic downtown districts, green spaces, and a lively cultural arts scene that includes art galleries, dining establishments, and community-wide First Friday events.
