Celebrity doctor helped save the life of a man who collapsed at Newark Liberty International Airport on Monday.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, who hosts the television talk show “The Dr. Oz Show,” was arriving from a Florida flight when he witnessed a man drop to the ground near the baggage claim.
Oz as well as Officer Jeffrey Croissant of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department rushed over to the man quickly to realize he had no pulse. Oz and Croissant immediately started taking turns performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while waiting for backup.
“I couldn’t get a pulse, which is the first thing you check for. He wasn’t responsive,” Oz told Robin Roberts today on “Good Morning America”. “I had to roll him onto his back and recognized that he was purple, I mean the color of an eggplant, and that’s a bad combination,” he added. “And there’s that soul-sapping moment when you realize you’re losing a life. So I started doing CPR, which is my training.”
Within minutes, more officers arrived with a defibrillator and oxygen. After multiple CPR cycles and being shocked with the defibrillator, the man started breathing again on his own, according to police. The 60-year-old man stabilized and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Oz stayed in touch with the man’s family and received the update that he is in the ICU but is doing very well.
This goes to show just how important CPR and defibrillator training is.
“When you learn CPR, the person whose life you’ll save will almost certainly be someone that you know and love,” Oz said. “You’re actually going to be able to use that on people who are dear to you.”
