You heard the song. You know the words. You sing along. But why? Let's do a deep dive into the song that has swept our fine city thanks to the Fightin's. Dancing On My Own. This article covers where the song came from, how it got to Philly, and even YOU in the last video ...

But before we get started, congratulations, Calum Scott on reaching 1-billion streams. And, you're welcome.

Dancing On My Own: The OG

Swedish singer-songwriter Robyn released Dancing On My Own waaaayyyyy back in April of 2010, according to Wikipedia. It was the lead single from Body Talk Pt. 1, which was her fifth studio album. But Robin's version of Dancing On My Own isn't the one you see the team dancing to.

Dancing On My Own: The Current Version

The Inquirer explains: What you are hearing from the Phillies locker room is not Robyn, but Calum Scott, an English singer who gained attention for singing the song on Britain's Got Talent in 2015.

Calum Scott

By the way, Scott's version has been played more than 950-million times. Robyn's only 267-million.

And then, Dutch DJ Tiesto remixed the Calum Scott version and that is what you hear.

What's It All About?

The song tells the story of one person's heartbreak because their former partner has moved on, yet they can't keep themselves away. The singer shows up where the new couple is and watches them, yearning to be part of something again.

Sound familiar?

Yes, it's a song about heartbreak and loneliness, but before you think,

That literally makes it a terrible hype song.

You have to remember that it became the Phillies celebrations song LAST season. And if you think about it, isn't that how this Phillies' 2022 season began? Dancing On My Own has become an anthem of self empowerment and resiliency for a team that picked itself up and is charging toward its goal ... again.

Not New to MLB

But this song isn't new to Major League Baseball. As a matter of fact, there's video footage below of the Red Sox celebrating with the same song in 2021. The Phils Kyle Schwarber spent some time with the Red Sox that year, and that is where he picked up the song and brought it to Philly.

So, how does Calum Scott feel about it all? He told NBC10 that if the Phillies win the World Series he will come to town to sing, saying:

I think you'll have to hold me back at that point.

The Lyrics

PHILADELPHIA, PA - AUGUST 28: Players of the Ugandan Little League World Series Team wait in the tunnel before coming out to dance with the Philly Phanatic during the game between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on August 28, 2012 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Somebody said you got a new friend
But does she love you better than I can?
And there's a big black sky over my town
I know where you're at, I bet she's around
And yeah, I know it's stupid
But I just gotta see it for myself
I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh, oh-oh
And I'm right over here, why can't you see me? Oh, oh-oh
And I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the guy you're taking home
Ooh-ooh-ooh, I keep dancing on my own, no
I just wanna dance all night
And I'm all messed up, I'm so out of line, yeah
Stilettos and broken bottles
I'm spinning around in circles
And I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh, oh-oh
And I'm right over here, why can't you see me? Oh, oh-oh
And I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the guy you're taking home
Ooh-ooh-ooh, and I keep dancing on my own
And oh no
So far away but still so near
The lights come up, the music dies
But you don't see me standing here
I just came to say goodbye
I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh, oh-oh
And I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the guy you're taking home
Ooh-ooh-ooh, and I keep dancing on my own
And oh no
Said I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh no
And I'm right over here, why can't you see me? Oh no
And I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the guy you're taking home
Ooh-ooh-ooh, and I keep dancing on my own
So far away, but still so near
The lights come up, the music dies
But you don't see me standing here

Robyn's Selfie Stick Version

According to Pitchfork, Robyn recreated some of her favorite hits during the pandemic in 2020. Because she was isolated, she did it on her own ... with a selfie stick:

The Version The Phils' Use

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her.
And I'm right over here, why can't you see me?
