The USSR Hockey team were the best team ever assembled winning the gold medal in five of the six previous Winter Olympic Games. They were the favorite to easily win the gold in 1980.
The USA Hockey Team was comprised of college kids who just wanted to play more hockey in their off-season. They were not expected to win anything, not even a medal.
On February 9th, the USA hockey team played the Soviet hockey team in an exhibition at Madison Square Garden where the Soviets dominated the Americans 10-3. This was exactly what everyone thought would happen if they played each other.
Well, the Americans played their hearts out in their Group Play and advanced to the medal round where they once again had to play the Soviets. Well, here we are.

Buzzy Schneider connects on a beautiful slapshot to beat the best goaltender in the world. USA ties it up 1-1. Wow, we could have a game here or is it just a fluke goal.
Mark Johnson nets a game tying goal at the end of the first
The video is a little wonky but it's still gives me chills. The best player on the team, Mark Johnson was a complete stud. With about 3 seconds left in the first, the US just took a shot at the goal from past center ice. The Soviets were heading to their bench thinking the first period was over... Mark Johnson kept skating and when the puck bounced off the goalie, he capitalized by putting the puck in the back of the net tying the game at 2.

(This is a scene from the movie, Miracle. I couldn't find a solo clip of the goal.) USA goes on the Power Play early in the 3rd. The Power Play is winding down and the Americans have one more rush. Dave Silk takes the puck through center ice... As he is getting checked, he flips the puck to Mark Johnson and it lands perfectly on his stick. He wrists it right in the back of the net to tie this game at 3!!!!

The Captain! Mike Eruzione aka Rizzo puts a wrist shot on goal and beat the keeper to take a 4-3 lead with 10 minutes remaining!! 10 MINUTES!! UGH!

The Americans held off the greatest hockey team for 10 minutes and won the game. Just to clarify, this was not the gold medal game. They went on to beat Finland to win the Gold but this game so amazing!
