A public memorial to Kobe Bryant and the eight others killed in a helicopter crash last month will be held on Feb. 24 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Information about timing and tickets for the ceremony has not been announced, but entry is expected to be severely restricted.
The Times reports that the date was selected after discussions with Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, the Lakers organization and the Staples Center. One source said there will be no procession, and the event will end in time to allow a previously scheduled Clippers game against the Memphis Grizzlies later that night.
The date "2/24" seems serendipitous, as "2" was the jersey number of Bryant's 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, who also died in the crash. Gianna was honored by her Mamba Academy basketball team this week, who retired her No. 2 jersey on Wednesday. Bryant wore "24" with the Lakers.
