We all know Eric Church’s signature move is to wear sunglasses on stage but have you ever thought about how it started?
Well, the reason is actually very practical. It’s to protect his eyes!
Standing at 6’3″ the bright lights would shine directly into his eyes while on stage. The lights would bake his contacts to the point that they would pop out of his dry eyes leaving him unable to see.
One day someone suggested he wear sunglasses on stage and the rest is history. It’s an easy way to ensure Church is comfortable while performing.
Once the glasses are on, Church gets his special nickname Chief.
“The band starting joking with me, when I put the hat and sunglasses on, they go ‘Alright, its Chief time, Chief’s here,” Church told Sounds Like Nashville.
