Teen Accidentally Moves into Retirement Community
Teen rents unseen apartment online only to realize it’s in a retirement community.
Madison Kohout was looking for a new place to live in Oklahoma when she came across a cheaper two-bedroom apartment. Before she knew it, the 19-year-old from Arkansas was moving in.
“When I went out to my car, I started meeting some of my neighbors,” Kahout told Insider. “To my surprise, they were all over the age of 65.”
Moving in was so hectic that she didn’t even notice the “Senior Citizen Apartments” sign outside the complex until a week later.
“The first week of moving here was crazy!” she told Newsweek. “I was busy with finding a job and setting up my apartment, I didn’t even notice! I thought it was a bit weird that all of my neighbors were significantly older than me. After my first week I saw a sign in front of the apartments, and it had clicked!”
“I realized I accidentally moved into a retirement village,” Kohout told Insider.
She shared a video on TikTok explaining her situation which now has more than 3.4 million views and 600,000 likes.

The teenager now documents her new life on TikTok for her 88,700 followers.
“How is life at the old folks’ home, you might ask? Let me show you,” she started off one of her recent videos. “When I get home it’s usually always super quiet. Because most of my neighbors are asleep by the time I get home. But one major perk is that I can play music whenever I want to, because some of them can’t hear.”
She seems to be making the best of her situation even joking with her followers, “if you’re struggling with rent, start your early retirement.”
