Iconic Christmas Carol Was Written in Philadelphia 150 Years Ago!
I love that Philly is the “first” for so many things. It obviously is the birth place of our nation so it makes sense, but it’s still fun to read about so many firsts.
The Christmas carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem” was written in 1868 by Phillips Brooks. He was the second rector of the Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square.
“He was in Bethlehem on Christmas Eve in 1865. He went to the service where they were singing Christmas carols at the site where Jesus was born and he was inspired to write this carol,” said Rachel Wenner Gardner, Rector at the Church of the Holy Trinity.
