Kevin Costner movies are part of our culture. He is one of the greatest American actors of all time so narrowing down this list was not going to be easy but we tried our best. I had a chance to talk to him leading up to the release of his newest project, ‘Horizon: An American Saga.”

We sat down on Tuesday, June 4th, to discuss the release of the new project. You can read a little more about that project coming up if you scroll down just a bit. At first, let’s get to know Kevin Costner a bit here.

Who Is Kevin Costner?

He was born in California back on January 18th, 1955, the third child of Bill and Sharon Costner. His father was a electric line servicer and his mother was a welfare worker. They moved regularly for his dad’s job, according to his IMBD page.

At age 18, he made his own canoe and decided to travel down the same river that Lewis and Clark traveled to the Pacific Ocean. I think we saw some foreshadowing of his love of American history.

He didn’t really get his big break in acting until the 1984 movie “Silverado” directed by Lawrence Kasdan. In fact, he was in “The Big Chill” but most of his work on that film actually ended up getting deleted. He was the cadaver and you really only seeing his arm.

From there, things really began to take off for Costner. He has publicly said that westerns are his favorite films and that seems to be the inspiration for his newest film.

Kevin Costner Movies, Adding New Project

‘Horizon: An American Saga’ is Costner’s newest massive project set to come out on June 28th. It is set to be part of a four part series with the second part set to release later this summer. His love of the Westerns genre definitely shines through in this ode to American expansion.

I enjoyed the film, the setting is absolutely stunning. The film is definitely, however, a part one of a multi-part film. A lot of setting up, introduction of the characters and their intentions. I was not left disappointed by any means but very much excited to have the story come full circle (hopefully) in the second part.

Top 5 Kevin Costner Movies

Keep in mind, I am just a country music morning show host on 92.5 XTU, but also a lover of film! But the best Kevin Costner movies? We took on that task from number 7 to number 1.

  • 5) The Untouchables

This guy doesn’t miss when it comes to co-stars. Kevin Costner stars alongside Sean Connery, Andy Garcia and Robert De Niro. Costner plays Elliot Ness on the search to take down Al Capone, played by De Niro. However, it was Sean Connery as Jim Malone that took home the Oscar. If you are looking for a great crime movie, they got you covered.

  • 4) Dances With Wolves

He is a Union Army Lieutenant and he plays it amazingly. It won Best Picture and six other Oscars including Best Director. As a fan of westerns, he probably looks fondly onto the days filming this while now filming his newest film, ‘Horizon: An American Saga.’

  • 3) Bull Durham

This man is known for baseball movies, starring in more baseball movies than pretty much any other actor. But only a few are going to crack our top seven. He plays Crash Davis in this great film, starring alongside Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. Davis is a minor league catcher and in the middle of a love triangle with the aforementioned stars.

  • 2) JFK

An Oliver Stone film, “JFK” is absolutely incredible, could not recommend more. I have always been fascinated with the Kennedy assassination so maybe that’s why I love it so much. But Costner’s performance as Jim Garrison is pretty incredible. Did you know, fun fact here, that he wasn’t the first one picked for the role? Harrison Ford was originally offered the role but turned it down. After meeting with Oliver Stone, Costner joined the project.

  • 1) Field Of Dreams

I am extremely bias when it comes to this choice as my number one Kevin Costner movie. It has always been my personal favorite movie of all time, not just my favorite Kevin Costner movie. I will also make the argument that it is the best baseball movie of all time without hesitation. I mean, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan, Burt Lancaster along side Costner? Yes please.
