Venice Hauntingly Quiet Amid COVID-19 Quarantine

VENICE, ITALY – MARCH 9: A canal and the roads next to it are seen completely empty on March 9, 2020 in Venice, Italy. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced a “national emergency” due to the coronavirus outbreak and imposed quarantines on the Lombardy and Veneto regions, which contain roughly a quarter of the country’s population. Italy has the highest number of cases and fatalities in Europe.
The movements in and out are allowed only for work reasons, health reasons proven by a medical certificate. The justifications for the movements needs to be certified with a self-declaration by filling in forms provided by the police forces in charge of the checks.

Two tourists made a lot of Venice locals unhappy with their antics in the historic city.

They were arrested in the Italian City yesterday after they sped down Venice’s Grand Canal on motorized surfboards. Venice’s Mayor Luigi Brugnaro had quite a bit to say on the matter.

“[They are] two overbearing imbeciles who are making a mockery of the city.”

The mayor shared the video of the stunt and offering to buy dinner for anyone who identified them, the men were apprehended. What a great tactic to catch a criminal, right?
