First stadiums. Now movie theaters - Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour smashes box office records.

A Smash at the Box Office

The show is selling out across the country, whether it be live or on the screen. This weekend was ‘opening weekend’ for The Eras Tour film, and, while the official numbers are not out at the time of publishing this article, we do know Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour film is the highest-grossing concert film in domestic box office history. The movie is estimated to have brought in approximately $95 million. And that is this weekend alone! Now, I say that because it is a lot more than "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" in 2011. In Bieber’s entire run, the concert film only brought in $73 million.

To put that all in perspective, the current record holder for an October open is 2019's “Joker” which brought in $96 million its opening weekend.

And consider this ...

The film didn’t even exist a few months ago. Nor did anyone even know it would, or that it would be in movie theaters. Taylor's concert film took an iconoclastic path to success, just as she did. The film is not distributed by a major studio because Taylor struck up a deal with AMC theaters, the world's largest theater chain. And advertising? There wasn't any. None that she paid for, anyway. The only advertising, really, was what Taylor mentioned on her social media accounts.

Bigger than Michael Jackson?

EntertainmentWeekly claims Taylor's global number for the first weekend at the box office will look something like $128 million, which dwarfs Michael Jackson's "This Is It" in 2009 which brought in about $74 million in its opening weekend.

Now, let's talk about what Taylor brings in ... According to Variety, Taylor gets to take home about 57% of ticket sales. That means she made $54 million dollars this weekend alone. What is even more mind-blowing, is that it is a pittance compared to what she will make from the live tour. We’re talking billions.
