From Books to Brews: College Roommates Open Future Days Beer Co. in Northern Liberties
Future Days’ co-owners, Sean McGuire and Nick Mata, have built on their early beer-making ventures in an off-campus apartment at Fordham University in the Bronx. After graduating from Fordham, the pair went their separate ways to pursue careers in finance and accounting. Five years after graduation, however, the two reconnected in Mata’s Long Island garage, brewing batches of beer.
After winning several home brewery awards and McGuire gaining commercial brewery experience at Half Full Brewery in Stamford, Connecticut, the two quit their day jobs to pursue their passion for brewing. Upon settling in Philadelphia, McGuire convinced Mata to join him there.
Future Days Beer Co. will be open Thursday through Sunday. It will offer four — potentially five — beers on tap, with more planned for the future. They include two hazy pale ales, a West Coast pale ale, and its flagship beer, Future Days Kölsch. A fifth beer could be coming by the weekend of Dec. 14-15.
While McGuire and Mata aim to create a fun, casual place for guests to hang out and catch the Eagles on TV, they also seek to cultivate a loyal following among people looking for a good beer.
“We got into this because we wanted to make really, really good beer. We’ve drank really good beer. We know what it tastes like. So our overarching mission is to brew great beer that Philadelphia could be proud of — that we could be proud of,” said McGuire in an interview with the Philly Voice. “We want it to be some of the best beer in Philly when all is said and done.”
