Keith Urban: This Rock Icon Inspired His Christmas Video
Keith Urban’s 2019 Christmas song “I’ll Be Your Santa Tonight” had a great music video where he sings at a piano in a white suit and guitar in a black suit.
As Keith recently told us, that video was inspired by a former Beatle. He explained, “When we shot the video, we actually had a guy and a girl playing the role of a guy and a girl, and I was filmed on the set with the trees and the whole thing, and the piano, and whatnot. But when we sort of started putting it together, it felt like it was pulling in too many directions, and so we made the decision to just keep it focused on the dude singing. But I also wanted to…there’s this old Paul McCartney video to a song called ‘Coming Up,’ and Paul plays all the people in the band. It’s an amazing video.”
He continued, “It’s always stayed with me. There must be about 12 people in the band, and they were all him, dressed up as different characters, and I always loved that video. So, I asked if we had time to do something small version of multiple people played by me. Also, because the song has these sort of backing vocal hooks, and I thought it would be nice to have those represented by someone, and in this case (laughs), I’m the someones.”

Urban recently talked with Jennifer Hudson on her show about his 2009 “Escape Together World Tour,” when Taylor Swift was his opening act.
Keith told Hudson, “She was amazing even back then. I would sit up front and watch her sing, and I’m like, ‘Oh, she was singing way off into this other thing.’ You could see it. She was playing way past where she was already. It’s amazing.”
Urban also shared after Jennifer played him a video clip of Swift performing alongside him dressed like a member of the band KISS, which was “a prank” she pulled.
Keith said that at the time, he had a song called ‘Kiss a Girl,’ and it was the last night of the tour. He recalls, “She came out dressed as Ace Frehley from the band KISS. I thought it was KISS for a minute. It was so good.”
