Miracles really do come true and Buffalo Bills Star Damar Hamlin is proof. Damar held a press conference today to talk about the cause of his cardiac arrest and his future in the NFL. I remember watching the game live and I still can’t believe he’s here. In his press conference he said, “I died on National TV in front of the whole world.” The game was a Monday night on Jan 2 Bills vs Bengals. After Damar’s injury, the NFL suspended the game.
According to Dr. Gordon F. Tomaselli on behalf of the American Heart Association, it’s “a rare cardiac arrest immediately following a blow to the chest” that “induces a potentially lethal heart rhythm disturbance, or arrhythmia, called ventricular fibrillation.”
Hamlin told reporters that his injury is “the leading cause of death in youth athletes across all sports” and he’ll be “personally taking a step” to combat that statistic and raise awareness.
Damar has been making it his mission to educate the importance of have AED’s in schools and with every sports teams because it literally save his life. According to the American Heart Association, CPR can improve the chances of survival until emergency medical assistance arrives.
Hamlin said, “For schools that have AEDs, the survival rate for the children from sudden cardiac arrest is seven times higher. The Access to AEDs Act will help ensure that schools are just as prepared and trained to respond in a time of crisis as those on the sideline of an NFL game.”
