Unfortunately, a famous Philadelphia university will close after the 2024 school year. Cabrini University, the small Catholic college on the Main Line has been operating with a budget deficit since 2013; it has tried cutting staff and eliminating academic programs to get solvent.
Let’s take a look at some of the other popular universities around Philadelphia. Philadelphia has a rich history of colleges and universities. Currently, there are at least 54 colleges serving the area, including 45 private colleges and universities, 2 public colleges and universities, and 7 community colleges offering 2-year degrees.
The whole reason I ended up in Philly was because of college. I knew I wanted to go to college in a city (as I am from a small town), and I knew I wanted to be in the entertainment business. As soon as I saw Drexel University and you could see the Philadelphia skyline from Drexel’s Main Building, I knew that was it.
I can’t imagine how tough it must be for current students who are well into their major, have friends, and are involved in sports and other clubs and organizations for it to all be over. Gwynedd Mercy University, in Montgomery County, and Rosemont College, another Main Line School about 10 minutes from Cabrini, both announced they would accept Cabrini transfer credits and match students’ financial aid packages.
Other courting transfers included Eastern University, also in Radnor, and Holy Family University, in Northeast Philly.
