It’s pretty insane to think that it’s almost 50 Years since the Flyers won the Stanley Cup with the Broad Street Bullies. They had such an impact on the city and the sport that there is now going to be a television show about them. What’s probably just as crazy as the last time the Flyers had any impact in the NHL or the the city was in 2010 when they made it to the Stanley Cup finals but lost. They have been so awful the past few years, they traded away almost all of their decent players or players they hoped were going to be stars, fired coaches, GMs, and Presidents and now are kind of finally admitting they are in total rebuild mode. Rumors are swirling that the Flyers are about to trade goalie Carter Hart, who was supposed to be one of the best in the league a few years ago.
In case you weren’t aware, HBO Sports made a documentary in 2010 called the Broad Street Bullies. It chronicles the Philadelphia Flyers from their beginnings as an expansion team in 1967, to their back-to-back Stanley Cup championships (1974, 1975), and three straight Finals appearances (1974–76).
The Broad Street Bullies were so popular and so well knows in Philadelphia, XFinity Live even has the Broad Street Bullies Pub.
As for the new television series inspired by the Broad Street Bullies. Director Jeff Hare calls the series “Rocky meets the raucous mayhem of Slapshot, set in the free-wheeling Boogie Nightsof the 1970s.” The TV series based on the brawling Philadelphia Flyers of the 1970s, is in the works, and it will go behind the scenes and show the never-before-seen personal side of those connected to those wildly exciting hockey team. The underdog Flyers won the Stanley Cup in 1974 – and became rock stars around the Philadelphia area — while in just their seventh year of existence.
Fun Fact, I babysat for Bobby Clarke’s grandkids, but had no idea who he was. I didn’t grow up in Philly or with hockey so I thought he was just a fun grandpa. Ha.
