Shannon’s Top 5 ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Songs

Taylor Swift released her 12th album on Friday, April, 19th. It was a highly anticipated album announced during Taylor’s award speech at the 2024 Grammy’s. The pop star won for Best Pop Vocal Album. If you are a Swfitie then you know that everything Taylor does when she is in front of a camera is intentional. Swifties, like myself, were quick to clock the moment Taylor not only said the number two but also held up two fingers while saying it. We collectively knew the number two would is a clue. Unbeknownst to us then was that she is wearing the same dress to the Grammy’s as she is in her Fortnight music video with Post Malone.

Swifties eventually discovered why she wanted us to remember this clue. After 16 tracks from The Tortured Poets Department dropped, Taylor added another 15 songs to the album at 2 am. 2 am. That was the mysterious easter egg she revealed at the Grammy’s.

Who Is The Tortured Poet’s Department About?

Matty Healy

We assumed that TTPD would be about her ex-boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, but it seems another man was her muse for this album. Swift and Alwyn broke up just as the Era’s Tour started in April of 2023. Remember, the six-year-long couple had probably broken up for a few months by the time the public heard the news. A month into Taylor’s tour, she began publicly dating The 1975’s Matty Healy. Allow me to be blunt when I say this – he is the ultimate bad boy. He smokes cigarettes, he says what’s on his mind, and he is known for only dating models.

Despite all of this, Swift & Healy seemed incredibly happy with each other’s company. Even attending each other’s concerts and writing in the studio together. Fans have speculated that the two singers have been crushing on each other for years, which I think is adorable. Despite Matty Healy not being “the one” for Taylor Swift, he was a great distraction for her while mourning her previous long-term relationship.

Swifties have pinned down the songs that hint to Matty Healy. Fresh Out The Slammer, The Tortured Poets Department, and Fortnight are just a few that relate back to The 1975’s lead singer.

Scott Borchetta

Fans originally speculated that The Smallest Man Alive is also about the Chocolate singer, until TikToker Blabbertok pointed out that it could be about someone else – Scott Borchetta. He is the man that sold Taylor’s masters to Scooter Braun and very unliked by all Swifties.

Travis Kelce

There is one more man referenced in this album and his name is Travis Kelce. The Alchemy and So High School are both about the football player and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend. Swift and Kelce have been publicly dating since September 2023. All the rumors were confirmed when Taylor was sitting in the Kelce suite at a Kansas City Chiefs game next to our beloved Mama Kelce. Since then, the pop-star and football player have been publicly showing their love and affection with one another, just like high school.

The Tortured Poets Department at The Era’s Tour

Our record-breaking artist, Ms. Swift, has been using Youtube Shorts to post quick clips and pictures of her life. With the help of a pause button, Swifties have been quick to analyze each video frame by frame. My crazed self included. When watching this video, I noticed two things, a barricade with the TTPD logo on it and her backup dancers rehearsing in top hats with canes.

I only had 100 questions – WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Does this mean that she will be adding this album as a new era? If so, where in the setlist will it be placed? Is it for a new music video? The concert is already 3 hours long, what will these songs replace? Which songs will be taken out? Which one of the 31 songs from the album will be performed?

So I just have a few questions about this… All will be answered on May 9th, when Taylor Swift returns to the stage in Paris, France.
