Philadelphia To Get 250 Cherry Blossom Trees Before Semiquincentennial
Cherry Blossom are headed to Philly to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States!
Cherry Blossom Trees For 250 Years!
Let’s first talk about what exactly the Semiquincentennial is. (Whew, that is definitely a mouthful). The Semiquincentennial refers to the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, which is celebrated in 2026. The term “semiquincentennial” comes from the Latin words for “half” (semi) and “five hundred” (quincentennial), meaning a 250th anniversary.
A little history refresher: The celebration marks the year 1776, when Philadelphia was the location of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a pivotal event in American history. Philadelphia played a central role in the founding of the United States, and the Semiquincentennial will celebrate the city’s rich history, culture and its significant contributions to the nation’s founding.
The official celebrations are being planned by the Philadelphia 250 Commission, which will organize various events, programs, and initiatives leading up to and during the anniversary year to honor this historic milestone. The celebration will not only reflect on Philadelphia’s past but also look ahead to its future.
Where Are The Cherry Blossom Trees Going?
The Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia is leading the charge of this incredible project. The bulk of the trees will grow in West Fairmount Park, joining the existing gaggle of cherry blossoms near the horticultural center and Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center. JASGP also plans to plant a cluster on the other side of the Schuylkill River by the statue of Ulysses S. Grant and another near Blankenburg Elementary School in Mill Creek.
Sidenote: If you’ve never been to the Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center, please add it to your list. It’s such a hidden gem, and it’s a perfect spring activity.
Philadelphia already has an incredible about of cherry blossoms, so if you’re looking for something beautiful to take in this Spring and Summer, definitely make the trip. Kelly Drive has a beautiful display that makes for a perfect day picnic and walk. Peak bloom is expected to reach Philadelphia between Saturday, April 5, and Tuesday, April 8.
