Hockey Rink Built In Backyard For Ultimate Neighborhood Fun!
Hockey for all? Count us in! For the tenth year in a row, a dad in Franklin Park, Pennsylvania, has transformed his backyard into a winter wonderland open to neighborhood kids. What started out as a simple project for Chris Filiaggi‘s then five year old son Luca to have a place to skate and play hockey, has grown into a community hub, complete with an ice rink, thousands of lights, a fire pit, and plenty of laughter from neighborhood kids.

The rink has helped Luca, now 14 and playing for Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Hockey, practice his skills at home while fostering his dreams of one day playing in the NHL. It’s also a magnet for local kids, who gather every day to skate, practice, and have fun. “When I come home from work, sometimes there are 10 kids out here,” Filiaggi says, delighted by the sense of community the rink has created.
Kids from ages four to fourteen enjoy the setup, which has become a beloved tradition during Franklin Park’s cold winters. Filiaggi is thrilled to see the excitement his creation brings to the neighborhood kids, saying, “This brings happiness and joy, and I love having them in my backyard.” Weather permitting, the family plans to keep the rink open until March.
