Andie Summers ‘High Key’ Tackles Teens & Teen Slang
Bet. Cap/No Cap. High Key. Have you heard these words before? If so, you probably have a teenager. I would imagine the lingo “kids use these days” changes with every generation, but this new batch is … something else. I want to share with you how I tackle being the mom of teens and teen slang. And then keep scrolling to hear Tori’s reaction to our video that she intended to send to her friend, but sent to me instead. (hahahaha … great life lesson, kid)
I have a teenaged daughter and we have a great relationship. I admit I do not know what the heck she is talking about when she says things like, “Weird flex but okay.” She, on the other hand, gets annoyed that I have said that to hear at least 13 times in the last month. How could I still not understand? Well, Tori, I don’t. Because it just doesn’t make any sense to me, and more importantly, I just don’t care.
But that’s not entirely true.
I do care. I think it is incredibly important to be aware of what my teenaged daughter is talking about – and how she is talking about it. We truly have a wonderful relationship and I think that is for a few reasons.
- I am incredibly immature. We do not always agree, and when that happens, things get so loud that we laugh about it. We take the argument from disagreeing to making fun of the fact that we disagree.
- We talk. We talk about everything. I started talking to Tori about her friends and what is going on in school when she was old enough to sit in the front seat with me in the car. I find the car is the absolute best place to have a serious conversation with your kids because you don’t have to look at each other, so it doesn’t get too awkward. Even during those awkward conversations. Yes, I told her about the birds and the bees during a road trip.
- I am always honest with my kids. I do not have all the answers and cannot always relate to what they are going through. In those instances I tell them that. It allows me to get on their level and we can try to figure things out together.
I do not have all the answers – as you can see below from our video of me tackling teen slang – but I do have two great kids, and while I believe God gives you what you can handle, I will give partial credit to my husband and myself.

Shout out to Tori’s friend Morgan for being a good sport with this. The three of us had just come back from a New Years Day hike. A very long, very hilly hike in the mud.
