6 Tips to Help Stop Squirrels from Eating Your Pumpkins
There is nothing worse than spending money on fall décor and pumpkins only to have them ruined by a bunch of critters.
If your Halloween pumpkins are getting carved by squirrels and chipmunks before you get to there are a few things you can try.
- Critter Repellant. You can pick this up at more garden supply stores and is applied to your pumpkins to stop small animals and deer from eating your pumpkins. However this will need to be reapplied after it rains.
- Bowl of Vinegar. Critters like squirrels and chipmunks are not a fan of the smell. Bonus, you can also use vinegar (2 tablespoons) mixed with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a quart of water brushed over your carved pumpkins to help with wilting.
- Hot Sauce & Water. Squirrels aren’t a fan of the heat.Mix about a gallon of water with a small bottle of hot sauce and a teaspoon of soap into a spray bottle and spray your pumpkin all over.
- Pet hair. Sounds a bit strange, but if you have a shedder, grab a layer of pet hair and then place your pumpkin on top, or arrange the hair around the pumpkin. Squirrels will think it is a predator.
-
Windex + Pledge. Spray your pumpkins first with Windex then with Pledge. Apparently squirrels are not a fan of the smell.
- Vaseline. A thick coat of petroleum jelly will keep squirrels at a distance. Vapor rub also works the same.
