In its rankings criteria, Healthgrades evaluated clinical performances for approximately 4,500 hospital facilities spanning over 30 common procedures and medical conditions. According to Healthgrades, the rankings are designed to support patients as they choose a doctor and hospital to seek treatment.
“While there are several factors to consider when looking for a doctor, hospital quality is one that can have a critical impact on a patient’s overall quality of care,” said Dr. Brad Bowman, Healthgrades’ chief medical officer and head of data science, in a news release.
What to Think About When Choosing a Hospital and Doctor
Rankings for hospitals and doctors, such as the Healthgrades rankings, can play a significant part in helping patients find the best quality care available to them.
Nancy Foster, vice president of Quality & Safety Policy at the American Hospital Association, said that the association supports several principles for quality report cards and rating systems that require hospitals to “have a clearly stated purpose with measures selected to fit this purpose.”
In an interview with Healthline, Foster said, “When making health care decisions, patients can and should use all available tools at their disposal such as talking with friends and family and consulting with doctors, nurses, and other health care providers who know their specific health care needs.”
