You heard the song. You know the words. You sing along. But why? Let’s do a deep dive into the song that has swept our fine city thanks to the Fightin’s. Dancing On My Own.

Wikipedia says:

“Dancing On My Own” is a song by Swedish singer-songwriter Robyn, released on 20 April 2010 as the lead single from her fifth studio album, Body Talk Pt. 1 (2010), the first in her Body Talk series.”

But Robin’s version of Dancing On My Own isn’t the one you see the team dancing to. The Inquirer explains:

Instead, it’s the remix by the Dutch DJ Tiësto of a cover of the song by Calum Scott, an English singer who first performed it as a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent, in 2015. It went on to become the best-selling single in the United Kingdom the following summer.

By the way, Scott’s version has been played more than 950-million times. Robyn’s only 267-million.

The song is about one person’s heartbreak because their former partner has moved on, yet they can’t keep themselves away. The singer shows up where the new couple is and watches them, yearning to be part of something again.

Sound familiar?

Yes, it’s a song about heartbreak and loneliness – but isn’t that how this Phillies’ season began? Dancing On My Own has become an anthem of self empowerment and resiliency for a team that picked itself up and is charging toward its goal.

But this song isn’t new to Major League Baseball. As a matter of fact, there’s video footage below of the Red Sox celebrating with the same song in 2021.

Check out the variations of the song below, as well as the lyrics, so you can sing and dance along!

  • The Lyrics

Somebody said you got a new friend
But does she love you better than I can?
And there’s a big black sky over my town
    I know where you’re at, I bet she’s around
And yeah, I know it’s stupid
But I just gotta see it for myself
I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh, oh-oh
And I’m right over here, why can’t you see me? Oh, oh-oh
And I’m giving it my all, but I’m not the guy you’re taking home
Ooh-ooh-ooh, I keep dancing on my own, no
I just wanna dance all night
And I’m all messed up, I’m so out of line, yeah
    Stilettos and broken bottles
    I’m spinning around in circles
And I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh, oh-oh
And I’m right over here, why can’t you see me? Oh, oh-oh
And I’m giving it my all, but I’m not the guy you’re taking home
Ooh-ooh-ooh, and I keep dancing on my own
    And oh no
So far away but still so near
The lights come up, the music dies
But you don’t see me standing here
I just came to say goodbye
I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh, oh-oh
And I’m giving it my all, but I’m not the guy you’re taking home
Ooh-ooh-ooh, and I keep dancing on my own
    And oh no
Said I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh no
And I’m right over here, why can’t you see me? Oh no
And I’m giving it my all, but I’m not the guy you’re taking home
Ooh-ooh-ooh, and I keep dancing on my own
So far away, but still so near
The lights come up, the music dies
But you don’t see me standing here
