Cody Johnson Explains Where Carrie Underwood Duet Is
C”ody Johnson explained where his Carrie Underwood duet is after his new Leather album tracklist was announced, and a duet with Underwood was not in the twelve songs on the project. Cody teased the new collaboration in June before his performance at CMA Fest.
Johnson told us in an interview a few days ago (10/20), “I guess I can just go ahead and tell you, it’s on the deluxe edition. The issue is when you’re dealing with an artist of that caliber; you have to be very respectful of their time. You have to be respectful of their tour when they’re releasing an album when they’re releasing a single.”
Cody continued, “Carrie was so gracious to work with. I respect her so much as a vocalist and an artist. I think a lot of newer artists would have got that (duet) and said, ‘Look, I have a duet with Carrie Underwood! Look, look, look!’ I’m very thankful she did it, so I don’t care when it comes out. I know that it’s done. I know that when the timing is right, it will be beautiful.” He added, “I think it’s something that’s gonna be trajectory-altering as a single if it gets to be a single.”
He concluded, “I’ve just tried to be really respectful of Carrie and her camp. So we chose to put it on the later half just to in case for some reason if she calls and says, ‘Hey, it can’t be on there.’ I’m not gonna be mad. We’re just trying to really put the ball on her court.”

Johnson recently eleased the song “The Painter,” the first single from his Leather album out on November 3. The song is written by Benjy Davis, Kat Higgins, and Ryan Larkins.
Even though Cody did not write the song himself, it’s about his marriage. He said, “My favorite lyric in ‘The Painter’ is ‘For every wall I built, she saw a canvas.’ If there’s anything that describes my marriage with my wife, Brandi, it’s that line. And that’s why we’ve been together for 15 years.”
Johnson added, “I hope my fans are encouraged to take the time to appreciate the people they have around them. The ones who make their life beautiful and bring all the beautiful colors to their world when it could just be black and white and dark. Remember them and tell them you love them.”
