This was something out of Hollywood without a doubt. A bridge collapse in Baltimore occurred in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 26th, after the bridge was hit by a cargo ship. Extremely scary as crews are in the midst of a very large search and rescue mission. The bridge is known in the area as the Francis Scott Key Bridge, if this is part of your morning commute, we recommend avoiding the area due to obvious road closures but also allowing our first responders to access the area first during the search and rescue.

Bridge Collapse In Baltimore Video

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who may have been directly involved or affected by this tragedy. Very scary. We are sending prayers to our first responders involved in the search and rescue efforts. Here's the initial video from Fox 29 in Philadelphia. Below that you will be able to see the live stream that was going from the Baltimore Harbor which contains the impact and destruction in better quality.

Construction started on the bridge in August of 1972. It was opened in the spring of 1977. It was named after the author of the Star Spangled Banner, Francis Scott Key. According to Maryland.gov, "estimated cost of $110 million, represented the best alternative because it allowed for more traffic lanes and carried lower operating and maintenance costs than a tunnel." We will keep you updated here on the search and rescue efforts.

Here's the video of the bridge collapse in Baltimore.

What Happened?

It appears from the video above that a large cargo ship strikes the bridge, you can see if it on the left side of the screen, which then immediately causes the collapse of the bridge. This portion of the road is I-695 in Baltimore, Maryland, over the Patapsco River. This is more commonly known as the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

7 Shocking Photos From The Collapse Of I-95 And Cleanup

Here are 7 shocking photos from the collapse of I-95 and the ensuing cleanup.

Early Sunday morning, June 11, 2023, part of Interstate 95 collapsed due to a tanker fire underneath the northbound lanes in Philadelphia.

All lanes were shut down on I-95 near Cottman Avenue and State Road.

According to 6ABC the fire broke out after 6 am. Reports say the collapse happened around 6:22 am with one of the last cars driving over it less than a minute before the unthinkable happened.

Reports are that the tanker was carrying a petroleum-based product when the fire began. In the process of the fire, the northbound side of 95 collapsed on top of the burning truck due to the high heat. The southbound side also became compromised as a result of the blaze. All lanes on I-95 near Cottman Avenue and State Road remain closed. The southbound lanes will need to be demolished as well and the cleanup and rebuild could take months.

The NTSB and the  Federal Highway Administration are in Philadelphia to assess the damage and lend support.

It was reported on Monday (6/12) that sadly the truck driver, Nathaniel Moody, lost his life in the accident.

I-95 connects central Philadelphia with Mercer County in New Jersey and Bucks and Delaware Counties in Pennsylvania. An average of 160,000 commuters travel on this portion of I-95 every day.

Not only do people use I-95 daily to get to work, and it is most Philadelphian's access to the shore. PennDOT has suggested a detour for Philadelphians to use. State officials are even asking for employers to be sensitive to the travel times of their employees given the Interstate collapse.
