Sam Hunt Is Working To Heal His ‘Wayward Streak’
Sam Hunt is working to heal his “wayward streak.” His new song “Locked Up” was inspired by his brush with the law. In 2019, he was arrested in Nashville for a DUI, and since that time, he has worked to get himself straight with the help of his wife, Hannah.
Becoming The Version of Himself He Wants To Be
Sam told us in an interview this week, “I think a deep understanding that she and I together for us to both reach our potential and become the versions of ourselves that we both want to be; we are meant to be together, and through that relationship, will be able to achieve that and separate of each other we fall well short.”

“Wayward Streak”
Hunt added that he has struggled in the past, “I certainly have a wayward streak, a wider wayward streak than Hannah does; I don’t know that she has one at all.”
He explained, “Since I was twelve or thirteen or fourteen years old, I’ve been trying to wrestle that part of me into submission and bring it to heal. It has taken a long time, and my relationship with Hannah and God has been an important part of making progress in that department.”

When He “Wisened Up”
One more thing helped him to change for the better. He told us, “Having kids has been a huge part in that as well. I think having children wisened me up in a way that I don’t think anything else could have.”
“All those things combined and having a good foundation of right and wrong at the end of the day, I had loving parents who taught me between right and wrong. All those things gave me no excuse to getting off track.”
Sam concluded, “I try my best at times; true North is always very clear and easy to come back to.”
Run-Ins With The Law
Hunt also told us how the song came about. He revealed, “Well, ‘Locked Up’ is a song that started with a title. I had that title in my phone. I wanted to write a song called ‘Locked Up.’ I had no idea about what it may be about, although I have had a few run-ins with the law in my lifetime.”
In One Take
He continued, “My producer was playing me some music; he had built some tracks and was playing through a few songs, and I was looking at my phone, and I saw the title in the songs. The music sounded like the title, which is always a good start, and I just started singing that chorus. I think I filled in 30-40 percent of the lyric in one take.”
