PennDot Is Using Technology To Ease Congestion On The Schuylkill Expressway
This road has always been a thorn in our sides. No matter what time of the day it is, I-76 from the Pennsylvania Turnpike to the Walt Whitman Bridge has always been in “chronic rush hour.”
PennDot is putting the next phase of their plan to ease congestion on the Schuylkill Expressway by activating 73 “digital variable speed and overhead signs” between Valley Forge & City Avenue that will adjust speed limits in real time based on traffic and weather conditions.
The idea is to help reduce speeds, prevent rear-end collisions and help keep traffic moving.
The digital signs will be activated this Spring.
Other plans to unclog the road include flexible lanes to convert shoulders to travel lanes during rush hour, and traffic signals on entrance ramps just like those on the Blue Route to help control the traffic flow to I-76.
