Bring Your Own Bags New Jersey!
It’s nothing new, states have been banning bags for years, but now the Garden State is getting in on the action. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation to make his state that latest one to do so, as well as also banning Styrofoam food containers and cups. But the new law also makes New Jersey the first state in the nation to also ban single-use paper bags. Some other states charge a fee for paper bags, and Hawaii doesn’t allow bags with less than 40 percent recycled material. Also under the new law, food service businesses will be allowed to provide single-use plastic straws only upon request starting this month. The ban goes into effect in May 2022.
