Denny Hamlin Loses Win At Pocono Raceway
It’s the one race we’ll get at Pocono Raceway this year and it was a heck of a ride! The weather was going to make sure it was a hot event but the twists and turns were more prominent off the race course than on this year! The checkered flag went down and Denny Hamlin was first across the finish line. Kyle Busch came in second. So far so good. But in a stunning turn of events, Chase Elliott ended up getting the win.
According to NBCPhiladelphia, “In an extraordinary decision for a NASCAR Cup Series race, Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin had his Pocono win thrown out and runner-up and teammate Kyle Busch also was disqualified after their Toyotas failed inspections.”
That allowed third place finisher Chase Elliot to get the win, giving the Hendrick Motorsports driver a 4th won this season.
According to NASCAR, the last time it disqualified an apparent winner was April 17, 1960. Emanuel Zervakis’ victory at Wilson Speedway in North Carolina was overturned because of an oversized fuel tank.
