Less than 2% chance that the twins survive
The odds were not in their favor, but Abby and Erin defied every expectation. In the 11th week of her pregnancy, Heather Delaney, the mother of the two girls, learned that her twins were conjoined at the head. Here’s more about the condition…
Conjoined twins are already extremely rare, but craniopagus twins are even more so. Only two percent of conjoined twins are born fused at the head. Craniopagus twins occur in approximately one in every 2.5 million births.
The birth of these conjoined twins
They were born 30 weeks into the pregnancy weighing a total of six pounds between the two of them. They remained int he hospital up until their first birthday when they went through a skull separation surgery right here in Philadelphia at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Big shoutout to our local nurses and doctors here in the Delaware Valley for saving lives and making a difference every single day. Thank you for what you do!
Here’s more from Heather via the GoodNewsNetwork.
“There are days now where I sit back and think ‘I can’t believe how incredibly lucky we are’,” said the 33-year-old stay-at-home mom. “Yes, they have disabilities and things they’re working through, but they’re so happy.”
Kindergarten graduation for these conjoined twins separated
After a successful separation surgery of the girls, it was still quite the uphill battle. They are both coming to their seventh birthday defying all of the odds along the way.
Pretty amazing for these super strong girls, way to go!!
